The new Toyota Trade Plus scheme means that the Hilux is now offered with a tipper body, with the converted vehicle available through Toyota’s network. The actual conversion is done by the TGS Group, but the whole package gets a full Toyota five-year warranty.

The Toyota truck retains much of the Hilux’s attributes, with rugged go-anywhere ability, firm ride and long gear throw. However, strapping a large tipper body on the back doesn’t adversely affect it, although you will need to be aware that it has an internal load width of 1,900mm so sticks out slightly wider than the cab. The tipping frames are galvanised to protect against erosion, while it features a safety prop and a lead so you can operate the tipper mechanism while standing away from the vehicle.

There is a choice of two-seater Single Cab or four-seater Extra Cab bodies. The former offers a longer loading bay (2,140mm) but a slightly lower estimated payload of 930kg to the Extra Cab’s 1,000kg.

The verdict

Great if you want the practicality of a tipper, and the ability of a truck, but it will add £3,795 (ex VAT) to the cost of a donor vehicle.
