Volkswagen has shown off two new electric vans – the e-Caddy and e-Transporter.
The pair are both confirmed for production and will arrive in right-hand drive form in 2019 and 2020 respectively, with the e-Caddy arriving in the UK first.
They are able to arrive quickly because Volkswagen chose to outsource the development to a partner firm – electric and motorsport specialist ABT – rather than develop them in-house.
The e-Caddy comes with just the one battery option offering a 3.7kWh capacity and a 137-mile (200km) range. It comes with a total payload of 636kg, and the Caddy Maxi body it comes with offers a maximum loading capacity of 4.3m3.
The Transporter offers users a choice between carrying capacity and range, as you can go for a single-battery version or a double battery. The former has a maximum range of 129 miles (208km) and a payload of between 1050kg and 1186kg.
Adding the second battery almost doubles the range to 249 miles (400km) but the weight of the technology has a notable impact on the carrying ability. It is only able to offer a payload of 695-750kg.
Both vans charge to 80% in 49 minutes on a 40kW fast charger, while a 7.2kW connection takes just over five hours. When you opt for the second battery on the Transporter, this time inevitably doubles.
Because of the partnership with ABT, the plan is to offer both vans in more than one bodystyle – both cargo and passenger versions, and a choice of different lengths.
The vehicles are supplied to ABT, where they are converted to electric power, and then they are returned to Volkswagen to be sold in exactly the same manner as they would be if they were standard models.
Pricing and precise launch times and spec are yet to be confirmed, but expect more information on the e-Caddy around the time of the CV Show at the NEC in Birmingham in April 2019.
